Description
Scope and content: This collection consists of scripts and programs for the Gridiron Show, an annual roast of Tennessee politicians and headline makers. The show was sponsored by the Nashville chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The collection is arranged in chronological order and features materials from 1964-1983. The collection is incomplete and is missing the years 1967 and 1977-1981. The bulk of the collection consists of programs and scripts. The programs feature cartoons, performer photos, sing-along lyrics, local business advertisements and an acknowledgements page. The scripts include performance order, skit dialog and song lyrics. Some scripts include production notes. Also included in the collection are Gridiron Show advertisement posters for 1965-1966, 1968-1969 and newspaper clippings about the show for 1968, 1971-1972. Notable politicians routinely roasted were Beverly Briley, Frank Clement, John Jay Hooker Jr., Howard Baker Jr., Bryant Dunn and Guilford Dudley.
